Abstract

The main goal of this dissertation is to explore how social projects can leverage its potential, through some expansion strategies and be able to sustain itself in the long-term. This is the case of Projecto ReMix, an initiative born in Chelas - a problematic neighborhood in Portugal. This a project currently referenced at national and international level, with more than 25 points of sale across the country and orders from abroad. It has been receiving a lot of exposure thanks to its social intervention, namely in what considers the eco-design and eco-services activities. The increasing awareness of social enterprises’ potential to the economy and society is opening new opportunities and challenges to consolidate how governments and private institutions can support these initiatives, making them more efficient and dynamic. ReMix structure is, nowadays, represented in four distinct yet complementary levels: the Eco-Design, the Eco-Services, Eco-Brigades and Eco-Theatre activities. Within this dissertation, it is possible to re-live and follow all the challenges that 3rd sector organizations face, namely in funding itself, defining strategies and business model creation in a triple bottom line principle. In a transition phase, ReMix must now decide what path to pursue, every step, every hour, every member, every opinion counts. What shall be next steps ReMix must pursue in order to drive its mission and to achieve a long-term sustainability?.
