Abstract

The proposing work for the master degree in Architecture consist in the conception of a rehabilitation’s project of Casa das Bocas, dated from the eighteen century that, despite of its high state of deterioration, holds historical significance and has architectural features that make it unique. The house is located in the Historical Centre of Viseu and, despite of its value, it is unoccupied and in a state of ruin. As been gaining more and more importance in the recovery of the deteriorated heritage, rehabilitation, as an exercise of architecture, is the tool that allows to return the building to Viseu’s city and prevent its oblivion, promoting the resource of a heritage with material and immaterial values. The proposal consist in intergeracional co-housing, designated for elder and younger population. The prompt is to develop a different social answer - a new way of living - who can integrate the various advantages of this social share and, at the same time, take advantage of the house’s features. Aside of preserving the heritage, specifically a house with great value, the program, by sheltering young and old people, intend to be a solution towards the new social and demographic tendencies, therefore new housing needs. This proposal, both in terms of the house and program, is justified by a wide range of reasons. First of all, one of problems that Viseu’s Historical Center has come across in the last decades is the desertification of the population that has occurred, despite the central location and the proximity to services and commerce. In this context, the intention is to develop a program that enhances the social and population revitalization. Second, the João Mendes Street, also known as Bocas’s street where Casa das Bocas is located, is currently an area that holds a negative image from the city’s residents, because of the nighttime activity and prostitution. Along with other ongoing interventions on the street, the project is an opportunity that aims the revival of the area in order to improve the mental image of the street. This proposal aims to provide an integrated response to a wide range of problems which are been experienced nowadays in the intervention area.
