Innovation is necessary for the companies’ sustainability, maintaining business competitiveness, while also contributing to the sustainability of the national economy. Support for innovation, through national and international funds, is an important factor for the promotion and realization of innovation, making it possible to overcome some of the main barriers to innovation, namely financial issues and knowledge gaps, among others. These strategies enhance the creation of partnerships, enabling joint work between entities in the business and scientific systems, leading to the complementary of capabilities and, therefore, greater efficiency and success in innovation supported by investigation. Sonae MC is a great example of the potential provided by this type of support, allowing the company to innovate exponentially. Within the scope of the Master's Degree in Biotechnology and Innovation an internship was held as part of the Granted Projects team, responsible for managing consortium projects, with the participation of companies from the SONAE group, within the scope of national and European financing programs. The mobilizing projects ValorMar, MobFood, ID Foods and BIOma and the SnackFresh project within the scope of Portugal 2020 and the EIT Food RIS Consumer Engagement Labs within the scope of EIT Food, were monitored. As additional activities, the final developments of the LIFANA project, a project within the scope of the AAL program, and the communication processes of the Granted Projects team were monitored. Framed in the different projects, a multitude of tasks were carried out, involving collaboration and implementation of pilots, analysis and selection of food prototypes, assessment and forecast of sales results, monitoring, interlocution and collaboration with diverse teams of colleagues and scientific and business partners, among others. Such tasks have contributed to the development and/or improvement of numerous personal skills in the fields of acquisition, consolidation and application of knowledge, interpersonal relationships and communication skills, autonomy and proactivity, and of technical-scientific skills in the domain of project management, allowing the achievement of a work method more systematic, concise and effective. Therefore, it was possible to successfully achieve all the initially proposed objectives. The internship was a rich experience of learning and growth, enhancing the improvement of various skills necessary for professional practice in the food retail area, especially in the area of project management, a key area for an organization's differentiation and excellent performance.
