This report critically and reflectively addresses the knowledge and competences acquired during the internship in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing as a part of 15th master's degree program at the Institute of Health Sciences of the Portuguese Catholic University. The chosen theme focuses on the Promotion of Parenting in parents of newborns, fulfilling the expectations for the master’s degree in nursing with a specialization in Pediatric Nursing and serving as an important tool for specialist nurse in child health and pediatrics in providing care to the NB and their family. The specialist nurse has the added responsibility of preparing parents for the process of parenting, accompanying them throughout the process, supporting them in their decisions, alleviating fears, and imparting knowledge in a calm and confident manner, using simple and objective communication strategies. Only in this way is it possible to provide excellent care and produce health gains. The general objectives of the internship were to acquire competencies in specialist nurse in child health and pediatrics in different healthcare contexts and develop more complex competencies that promote parenting in health-disease processes. During the internship in the Intensive Care Unit, competencies were developed in caring for preterm newborns with complex nursing needs, promoting parenting through the care provided. In the face of more complex scenarios, parents report feelings of anxiety and fear due to being in unfamiliar situations. In this context, any changes can be detrimental to the progress made so far, which is why it became important to create a pamphlet that would at least present the new location where the newborn would be staying during the transfer to another service. In the Pediatric Emergency Department, it was possible to care for children in urgent and emergency situations, adapting the care to each moment. Although positive outcomes were not always achieved, these experiences were valuable and positive. In familycentered care, parents play a crucial role as primary caregivers because they have the best understanding of their children's individual needs. To ensure the healthy growth and development of children, it is essential to provide appropriate care. Therefore, the implementation of teachings becomes crucial, aiming for parental empowerment. Activities were developed to foster the capacity for autonomy in parenting, providing various resources for safe and quality care. The implementation of teachings and training, consolidated through pamphlets, stands out in promoting greater autonomy in care. Finally, in the Community Care Unit, it was necessary to demonstrate resilience in the face of unexpected events, adapting interventions to the local reality. Although it was not possible to directly address the promotion of parenting in newborns, competencies were acquired in the area of youth/adolescents in terms of specialization in Pediatric Nursing, intervening in common diseases and situations of risk that could negatively affect the quality of life of the child/youth (E1.2). The opportunity to participate in established projects in the Community Care Unit, such as the youth promoters, stands out as a means of passing information to a younger population, empowering them.
