Abstract

This intership report is inserted in the Master´s Course and specialization in Child and Pediatric Nursing, minister by the Instituto de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Lisboa). Sleep plays an important role in child development and so that good habits are acquired, it is fundamental to promote the implementation of sleep hygiene strategies from birth. Parents and health professionals tend to undervalue the importance of sleep, which led this theme to be considered as priority of nursing intervention. Since adequate sleep is closely related to the various contexts of comfort, as defined by Kolcaba, it becomes pertinent to approach Kolcaba´s Comfort Theory. The goal of this work is to demonstrate the course carried out throughout the various stages of the internship, as well as, to analyze the specific aims outlined and related activities, which allowed it to develop common competences of Specialized Nurse and specific of the specialization in Child and Pediatric Nursing, in the scope of the promotion of healthy sleep patterns. A Scoping review was performed, based on the principles reported by the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual (2015), using bibliographic search in grey literature and in several databases such as: EBsco, PubMed, Medline, Cinahl and B-on. During the intership, various activities were carried out such as: Health education sessions/ Informative poster/ brochures promoting healthy sleep habits in children and writing of a technical guideline for the implementation of nap time in the paediatric ward. In conclusion, the importance of the child's sleep approach is emphasized as it provides a unique opportunity for nurses to learn more about the children and their families. In this way, they evaluate the environment that surrounds them and promote the acquisition of health-enhancing behaviours. Early intervention in child sleep disorders contribute to adequate child development, improving family dynamics and parental role.
