Abstract
This report comes in the context of the Course report and wants to translate my journey along the Course Stage, which was held from 13 April to 19 December 2015.The objective of this report is to analyze, with good reason, the process of acquisition and development of competencies as Nurse Specialist Child and Pediatric Health. The methodology used is the description of activities and reflection on them, taking into account scientific evidence and also the mobilization of knowledge.
The main theme is to promote comfort in children: non-pharmacological strategies on pain relief. Comfort is an issue that troubles me as it is essential for the child and family wellbeing.
The Kolcaba Comfort Theory guided all my route over the different training modules because its taxonomic structure allows the provision of holistic care, and thus take into account all child and family needs.
After a Systematic Literature Review, which had the research question: What is the benefit of non-pharmacological strategies in relieving pain in promoting comfort the child?, I confirmed that there are benefits in using non-pharmacological strategies, the promotion of the child's comfort.
For each stage, I drew several specific objectives, according to the initial assessment and diagnosis of the situation that I gather. To achieve these objectives, I developed several activities in order to promote the comfort of the child and his family. These highlight, in primary health care, the promotion of pain assessment by nurses during vaccination; in the context of pediatric surgery, the creation of "music box that takes the pain"; in pediatric
emergency context the use of music in the treatment room; and finally, in neonatology, training of parents in promoting the comfort of their babies.
This training course has allowed me to draw implications for practice as developed in-depth knowledge within Child Health Nursing and Pediatric Nurse Specialist competencies defined by the Order of Nurses and Catholic University of Portugal.
