Abstract

This study´s main objective is to verify how adult people with Intellectual and Developmental Difficulties (DID) perceive Quality of Life (QoL) and the technicians who work with these people. To collect the data we used the Personal Outcomes Scales (POS). This measuring instrument is based on eight domains (Personal Development, Self-Determination, Interpersonal Relations, Social Inclusion, Rights, Emotional Wellbeing, Physical Wellbeing and Material Welfare) described to assess the QoL of this population and includes 2 indexes, (Personal Opinion and Direct Observation). The sample consists of 65 individuals who belong to 2 institutions, the Casa de Santa Isabel (CSI) and the Associação de Beneficência Popular de Gouveia (ABPG). 37 individuals are male (56.9%) and 28 are female (43.1%), aged between 18 and 58 years of age. They have a diagnosis of DID intermittent (n=31; 47.7%), and limited (n=34, 52.3%). There was also the participation of technicians who are directly acquainted with people with DID. These technicians have ages between 32 and 56 years, and they are mostly female (n=6). The qualifications are from the Secondary Education (n= 3), Higher Education, Bachelor Degree (n=3) and MA (n=2). The results indicates the existence of a moderate positive relationship between the QoL Index (Personal Opinion) and the QoL Index (Direct Observation), demonstrating that there is a correlation between these two indexes (p=0,0000), which is a moderate positive (rho=0,509). Concerning the domains analysis, adults with DID assigned higher values to the field of Interpersonal Relations (x=2,06), which means a greater emphasis on family, friends and the support received by them, and the lowest values are observed in the field of Material Welfare (x=6,82).
