The change of paradigm in the field/area of psychiatry that has been happening in the last years with the deinstitutionalization process requires the development of structures and responses of community integration. However, in Portugal, these services are not consistent with the state of the art in this field. In this sense, the main goal of this study was to evaluate whether there are major differences between living in the community or institutionalized in people with schizophrenia. In this way/therefore, we compared the quality of life, social support satisfaction and social functioning in patients with schizophrenia living in the community (N = 15) or institutionalized (N = 15). To this end, we used the following instruments, the Brief Questionnaire of Quality of Life World Health Organization - WHOQOL-BREF (WHOQOL Group, 1998, Portuguese version of Vaz-Serra, et al., 2006), the Social Support Satisfaction Scale - ESSS (Pais-Ribeiro, 1999b) and Personal and Social Performance Scale - PSP (Portuguese version of Brissos, Palhavã, et al., 2011). Contrary to the study hypotheses and it is argued in the literature, no significant differences were founded between the two contexts in any variable. We end up with a brief reflection of the main conclusions, limitations of the study, and with some suggestions for future investigations
