Abstract

In Portugal the MAR treatments started in 1986 with the purpose of supporting infertile heterosexual couples to achieve successful pregnancy. Thirty years later several changes took place in Portuguese law. A Decree-Law No 17/2016 on the 20th of June of 2016 stated that female homosexual couples, regardless of their marital status, that had the same analogical conditions as their partner were authorized to access MAR services, as well single women. This study aims to conduct a literature review about the sociodemographic characteristics and the psychological/emotional well-being of single women, non-marital partnership lesbian-couples and women couples that want independent motherhood. The systematic review of the current literature revealed six studies that related to sociodemographic characteristics and the psychological/emotional well-being of these groups of women. There were found five studies that provide information regarding to these women, but these studies did not integrate the psychological/emotional well-being aspect. The results indicate that these women are aged over 29 years old, remained in the academic path for a longer time and are stable at work level, with full-time jobs. Only one study that relates with the quality of mental health of these women (rated from less good, good and very good). Considering the fact scientific knowledge is the base of a quality mental health support, it is important to continue to conduct investigation on this topic.
