Abstract

Introduction: Neuro-Occlusal Rehabilitation (NOR) is a therapeutic approach to stomatognathic medicine which aims to treat dental malocclusion in children at an early stage, using techniques based on neuroplasticity and the principles of craniofacial development. It focuses on restoring the balance of all the structures that constitute the system, permitting to avoid the appearance of dental, joint, and muscular pathologies. It acts by physiologically exciting or controlling the neural centres of development, thus guiding the growth of the system. It is a line of thought from which various techniques and appliances have emerged, which are not very invasive for the individual. Objective: This method of approaching occlusal problems can be a real alternative to conventional Orthodontics, since its use in deciduous dentition is interesting not only because it accompanies and directs the correct growth of an individual's stomatognathic system, but also because it achieves a lasting morphological and functional balance, thus limiting possible future relapses. Materials and Methods: A Scope Review was carried out in order to observe the impact of the use of NOR in the treatment of different types of malocclusion in children in the deciduous dentition phase. To this end, a search was carried out in various databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, SciELO, Semantic Scholar and ScienceDirect, from which 9 articles were extracted. Results: Occlusal problems were resolved in children with deciduous teeth and malocclusion pathologies, using appliances and techniques based on the principles of NOR. Conclusions: The use of this technique at an early age seems promising for solving malocclusion problems in children, due to its ability to redirect the growth of the stomatognathic system. However, the lack of scientific evidence in this area does not allow us to draw firm conclusions. Many more studies are needed to prove the effectiveness of this line of thinking.
