Abstract

Introduction: Virtual reality and interactive digital simulations in recent years have been used in dental education to train students before interacting with real patients. The application of virtual reality in education has been demonstrated in the literature. Some recent publications have suggested that virtual and haptic
technologies can have really positive effects on the outcomes of dental medicine education applied in endodontics. Objective: To analyze the teaching and learning process by technological means, to analyze the influence of new technologies in the educational field, and to analyze the disadvantages and advantages in the use of new technologies. Materials and Methods: A search was made in the Pubmed/MEDLINE and Web of Science platforms using the keywords (endodontic education) OR (endodontic training)) AND ((simulators) OR (virtual reality)), and the selection of articles was conducted by inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: A total of 229 articles were obtained, 203 articles in Pubmed and 26 in Web of Science. After the exclusion of duplicates (n=26), we
proceeded to the selection of articles by reading the titles, taking into
account the inclusion and exclusion criteria (n=29). After complete reading
we obtained a sample of 10 final articles (n=10). Conclusion: The application of virtual reality has improved in the ability to increase theoretical knowledge, and the role of the teacher is also very important. More studies with larger samples and long-term clinical trials are needed to corroborate this possible positive impact of various virtual technologies on the outcomes of applied endodontic education.
