Abstract

The residence of children with their mothers in prison is a reality in Portugal. Studying these children is crucial, taking into account the age at which they remain in prison, which is decisive for their development. This literature review contains articles that were retrieved from 6 databases and selected taking into account the inclusion and exclusion criteria established between May and June 2023 and was prepared following PRISMA Checklist guidelines. The main results reveal that children who live in prison with their mothers, compared to children who were separated due to maternal detention, have lower levels of anxiety/depression at preschool age. The results of this literature review also indicate that, in addition to contextual factors, children's temperament has an important role at the establishment of a bonding pattern, which has repercussions on the development of children. One of the main limitations of the present systematic review concerns the care with the generalization of the data, since it only covers two studies, the only studies that address the theme and, in addition, the articles themselves already have generalization limitations. In terms of implications for the same practice, it provides clues for further studies and data related to the objectified questions.
