Abstract

The present investigation aims to determine the degree of functional dependence of individuals aged 65 and older who were admitted to the recovery of continued care. Thus, our purpose is to assess the degree of functional dependence in three distinct stages: during the stay in the convalescent unit, at discharge and after one month of that high. To this end, we carried out a study of hospitalization in the Convalescent Unit, part of the National Network for the Continuous Care, Santa Casa da Misericordia in Povoa de Lanhoso, proceeding to the application of 20 surveys of seniors, aged between 65 and 91 years of age (M = 76.6). It is a non-experimental quantitative study, the longitudinal panel. Usefully employed to form a socio-demographic and a scale: "Barthel Index". The results show significant differences in mean scores between each of the assessments. The mean scores of the Barthel scale increased significantly from the 1st to the 2nd assessment and the 2nd to the 3rd assessment, in other words, the rehabilitation of the elderly respondents in the sample is gradual and effective.
