The relevance of this study is underscored by the high prevalence of chronic diseases (WHO, 2022) and the need for effective and accessible interventions to improve the quality of life for those affected. This research aims to understand the contribution of an intervention program based on Expressive Writing (EW) in integrating the experience of chronic illness into the personal narratives of individuals with this condition, as well as evaluating its efficacy in reducing physical and psychological symptoms. A mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methodologies, is adopted within a constructivist framework. This is aligned with EW to comprehend how this tool enhances the construction of meaning and subsequent integration into the participants' narratives. To assess symptom reduction, the BSI and EQ-5D-5L were utilized before and after the intervention, and for the qualitative approach, session transcripts and EW products were coded. Quantitative results indicated no statistically significant differences in the subscales of depression, somatization, and GSI, nor in the EQ-5D-5L items. However, qualitative analysis revealed that EW facilitated reflections on the illness and its implications, promoting greater understanding and adaptation to chronic illness. Finally, the importance of therapeutic approaches that integrate narrative and emotional aspects is highlighted, offering a perspective on the use of EW in promoting psychological well-being in individuals with chronic illnesses.
