The perception that each individual carries of their previous family experience proves relevant to the choice, maintenance, or dissolution of romantic relationships in adulthood. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between personal perception of the pillars of the family of origin and romantic relationships, specifically focusing on the relationship between the factors of closeness and projection in the family of origin, dyadic adjustment, and relationship satisfaction. Data collected from a sample of 212 adult individuals currently in a romantic relationship were investigated, further exploring the relationship of sociodemographic, personal, and familial variables with perception of the pillars of the family of origin, dyadic adjustment, and relationship satisfaction. The data show a positive and statistically significant association between all four pillars of the family of origin - intimacy, continuity, cohesion, and transcendence - with satisfaction and consensus, as well as the perception of the family of origin correlating with satisfaction in romantic relationships. Furthermore, the results also revealed a relationship between the type of commitment of the parents and the perception of the pillars, highlighting relevant dynamics in both past and present family experiences.
