The main purpose of this study was to explore the parents’ perception about the possible protective role that comes from the participation in extracurricular activities (ECA), regarding the use of electronic media (EM). Seven parents of young people from the 3rd cycle of basic education who practiced ECA participated in this study. A sociodemographic questionnaire was used and a focus group was made. The main results revealed that from the parents' perspective, ECA promote the development of socioemotional skills in young people and that instructors play a relevant role as promoters of these skills. However, parents do not associate the socio-emotional skills developed in the ECA with a more positive use of EM. These results highlight the importance of the practice of AEC which, due to the integral development they provide in young people, can constitute a protective factor for a more positive use of EM. However, further studies are needed to deepen the parents' perspective on this issue.
