Abstract

This correlational research aimed to study the relationship between anxiety levels, coping skills and quality of life in a sample of 92 institutionalized and non-institutionalized subjects, in order to better understand the relationship between the study variables. In terms of the hypotheses we tried to study the differences in anxiety, coping and quality of life. We also analyzed the influences between genders in relation to anxiety, coping and quality of life; the differences between institutionalized and non-institutionalized subjects relatively to anxiety, coping and quality of life; differences between education levels on anxiety, coping and quality of life; and differences between marital status with regard to the variables under study. These hypotheses were tested with the aid of the demographic questionnaire, the Stade-Trace Anxiety Inventory (STAI; Spielberger, 1979; portuguese version adapted by Ponciano, 2001), to study the anxiety, the Brief Cope (Coper,1997; portuguese version adapted by Ribeiro & Rodrigues, 2004), to study coping and Health Questionnaire Reduced (SF-36; Ware, Snow, Kosinski & Gandek, 1993; portuguese version adapted by Ferreira, 2000), to study quality of life. The results of our investigation indicated that individuals who has greater anxiety, has lower coping strategies and lower quality of life. However, the results also indicated that institutionalized subjects did not differ from non-institutionalized subjects with regard to anxiety and quality of life.
