Abstract

Introduction: Traumatic events are very stressful experiences, understood by the subjects as critical events and generators of vulnerability and impotence, leaving them with a feeling of hopelessness and helplessness, so their effects can have repercussions in the short, medium and/or long term. Objectives: To analyze the impact of traumatic events on body awareness and autonomic nevus system reactivity, to study the relationship between traumatic events, body awareness and autonomic nervous system reactivity and the differences between victims with a history of trauma and nonvictims, at the level of the psychosocial variables under study. Methodology: The sample consists of 124 participants, of whom 64 are victims of traumatic life events (clinical sample) and 60 did not experience traumatic life events (nonclinical sample), who completed the following instruments: Sociodemographic Questionnaire; Life Events Checklist for DSM5 (LEC5); Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and Body Perception Questionnaire (BPQ). Results: Differences were found between victims with a history of trauma versus nonvictims, in terms of body awareness and reactivity of the autonomic nevus system. In addition, there is a positive and significant relationship between childhood trauma, traumatic life events and body awareness, and a positive and significant relationship between childhood trauma, traumatic life events and the reactivity of the autonomic nervous system. In addition, it is verified that childhood trauma and later traumatic life events in adulthood are positive predictors of nervous system reactivity and body awareness. Limitations: It was found that there are few or nonexistent studies that evaluate the relationship between the psychosocial variables under study. Conclusions and implications: The study allows us to acquire a greater knowledge about the impact of psychosocial variables on victims who experienced traumatic life events.
