Abstract

The use of social networks is increasingly becoming a reality, especially in adolescence, where these platforms are used as tools for entertainment, expression, and communication. This topic has increasingly been a reason for study and interest in order to understand this problem and its repercussions, mainly because it is a young age group that is still in the phase of developing its own identity, while being exposed to platforms that emphasize status, body image or an ideal lifestyle. In this sense, a descriptivecorrelational study was carried out with 75 adolescents, mostly female, aged between 13 and 17, with the aim of exploring the relationship between the use of social networks, selfesteem, body image and the symptoms associated with body dysmorphic disorder. For this, a sociodemographic questionnaire was applied that addresses the use of social networks and the presence of symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder, the Rosenberg SelfEsteem Scale and the Appearance Schema Inventory. The results obtained revealed a statistically significant relationship between the use of social networks and body image (r= .361; p= .001) and symptoms associated with body dysmorphic disorder (rs= .258; p= .026). Regarding the purposes of use, a statistically significant relationship was found with selfesteem (X2= 85.47: p= .031). Furthermore, there were significant differences between genders in terms of body image (U= 471.50; p= .023) and symptoms associated with body dysmorphic disorder (U= 445.50; p= .011), with the average order being more elevated in females. These results highlight the importance of understanding what is associated with the use of social networks, which may have important implications for practice and intervention with this population.
