This study is part of the "Media Activity and Mental Health" project, and its general aim is to explore the relationship between the time and perceived impact of using Electronic Media (EM), socio-emotional skills, and mental health in young people in the 3rd cycle. The study involved a sample of 275 young people aged between 12 and 15 (M = 13.16; SD = 0.69), from four schools in the north of Portugal. The results showed that young people spend more hours on EM on a typical weekend than on a typical weekday. The group of young people with high levels of social isolation and low levels of self-control reported spending more time on EMs during the weekend, compared to young people with lower levels of social isolation and higher levels of self-control. Participants with high levels of responsible decision-making, relational skills and low levels of anxiety perceived a more positive impact of using EMs, when compared to young people with low levels of responsible decision-making, relationship skills and high levels of social anxiety. These results emphasize the importance of promoting the development of skills in young people, which are key variables in controlling the time spent using EMs, mitigating the negative, and promoting the positive impact of EMs.
