Abstract

The objective of the dissertation was to explore the existing literature relationship between environmental sustainability and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). The method used was an exploratory Systematic Literature Review (SLR). The SLR results identified 40 scientific articles distributed across 5 main research topics: i) green innovation, environmental sustainability, and circular economy; ii) digital transformation; iii) global value chains; iv) leadership and organizational culture; and v) environmental performance and competitiveness. Green innovation, environmental sustainability, and circular economy is how the literature addresses the adoption of environmental best practices by SMEs, with a significant challenge being the lack of standardized measurement methods. Digital transformation is crucial for operational efficiency and minimizing environmental impacts but requires further investigation to understand the effects of specific technologies. Additive manufacturing can transform global value chain management by reducing transportation costs and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing resilience. Effective leadership is essential for developing and maintaining an organizational culture that values sustainability, but it is influenced by institutional and regulatory pressures. Finally, the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices by SMEs can lead to improved competitiveness through cost reduction.
