Abstract

This study fits in the analysis of family-school relationship, in particular the parental involvement in specialized teaching of music. For a full learning and development it’s important to have a shared education by setting objetives and joint strategies in order to achieve success. In specialized music teaching the parental involvement is very important as a support to the school tasks and also to stage activities, so relevants; being necessary for the effect the comprehension of it. Being this type of teaching optional, meaning it’s not mandatory, it’s expected a big involvement from the families. Therefor, the specific guiding goals for this study were: 1) understand families perception about specialized music teaching; 2) understand families perception about parental involvement; 3) identify the type of collaboration between families, schools and teachers in specialized music teaching. The adopted methodology was qualitative in nature. A script as been prepared for semi structured interviews, so, to collect the data from a sample composed by seven participants, from a regional conservatory of the north of the country. The results of this study show that most families do not know in detail this type of teaching regarding to their specificity, such as legislation, study plan, more technical terms and issues related to the instrument. Aware of their lack of information, parents insistently demonstrated the need to know and deepen their knowledge, proposing clarification sessions for this purpose, although listing difficulties well present in current society such as the difficulty in managing family life with work. However, parental involvement is considered by them to be very important for the well being of their children. They also classify this type of teaching as very important for the students personal development and as a future asset. Finally, implications for practice will be discussed.
