Abstract

In this report I will present the outcomes of learning and skills development and my reflection, which took place in trainings, developed in the scope of the Masters Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing, with special focus in patients with critical illness. Further more I will describe the activities, the achieved objectives and a critical analysis of my performance. The trainings were divided into two modules. Module III – Optional. It was held in the Infection Control Unit of Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon, during which the areas further developed linked with epidemiological surveillance multicentre programs integrated in the training done by the Institution and addressed to all clinical professionals (Nurses, Medical Staff and Operational Assistants) and in direct participation in institutional dynamics. Module I – Emergency Department which take place in the General Emergency Department at the same hospital. On this traineeship, I should like to emphasize the activities developed for and in the provision of care to the patient/family in an emergency situation, with emphasis on the first approach to the politrauma patient and in the relationship established with the family. I will emphasize also the training activities, particularly those related to the Prevention and Control of Infection and some techniques and procedures relating to Risk Management. Throughout the report I will present some suggestions resulting from learning and reflection with the purpose of contributing to the effective resolution of some identified problems. The general and specific objectives were achieved, resulting in improving specialized skills and, consequently in the development of my professional performance, as it should be expected in a Specialist Nurse.
