Abstract

This report concerns the final phase of Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing which culminates in obtaining the title of Nurse Specialist. This document presents a critical-reflexive analysis of the path developed over the apprenticeship course, the objectives that have been set and achieved, the activities and skills acquired and/or developed. The three modules making up the Apprenticeship were developed in the Hospital Acquired Infection Control Commission in Santa Marta Hospital, Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Central (Module III) and Emergency of São Francisco Xavier Hospital, Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Ocidental (Module I), and had accreditation to Module II, referring to the Intensive Care Unit. The report was organized taking into account the Nurse Specialist Skills (Decree-Law nº 161/96, of September4 altered by Decree-Law nº 104/98, of April 21) and the Curriculum of the Master Course in Medical-Surgical Nursing at UCP (UCP, 2010). The report has been divided into five chapters, in order to facilitate it’s reading and understanding. The preparation of this report is intended to demonstrate the acquisition and/or development of skills in the Advanced Nursing, in providing care to the sick and elderly adults in situations of serious illness and different care settings. The work required demonstration of knowledge, understanding and ability to mobilize this knowledge to identify problems and opportunities for intervention and assistance in various contexts related to the multidisciplinary field of expertise. To this end, it was essential to integrate knowledge from different areas, based on conceptual frameworks, nursing theories and decision-making in order to identify problems, solve complex situations, communicate the integration of knowledge and reasoning behind the intervention and reflect on the implications for care practice.
