Abstract

The elaboration of this report fits into Master`s Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Nursing Medical-Surgical of Portuguese Catholic University, which is composed by a curricular unity called Medical Surgical Nursing Internship and it consists in three Modules, namely Emergency Service,
Intensive Care and optional- Committee on Control of Hospital Infection.
In relation to Module I – I opted for the Emergency Service and it was granted to me the accreditation, because it was recognized as acquires a wide range of advanced skills in the area of assistance to the adult patient and to the elderly/family in critical situation and organ failure, as a result of seventeen years of professional nursing in the emergency department of the Hospital of São Francisco Xavier, emphasizing the care, management, training and clinical supervision.
With regards to Module II – Intensive Care Unit, I chose an internship at the Hospital of São Francisco Xavier where I worked in specialized care services to the patient and family, namely: - Humanization of care, in the supporting and establishing a helping relationship to the patient family, in the supporting to ventilated patient emphasizing in this case the non-verbal communication;
- In leadership, acting as team leader in complex situations such as PCR;
- Projects in the framework of Prevention and Infection Control, in management and supervision of care, especially in fulfillment of standards and procedures associated with the use of central venous catheters, using a tool for the practices called “Bundle” for which I checked the language, structure and operational of the same; - Resorted to do in service training to emphasize prevention of infection strategies, to be taken by nursing team and I tried to be a vehicle for guiding and facilitating changes in practices to promote the improvement of care.
I decided to make the Module III – optional in Commission for the Control of Hospital Infection.
In this module I developed areas such as: - Knowledge acquisition in safety practices and worked methodologies/Tools as a specialist nurse I can incorporate into my practice; - Elaborated a tool to be used for the standardization of a safe care, in order to Prevention and Control of infection associated with central intravascular catheters called “Bundle” according to the best scientific evidence, that I took to the next module in Intensive Care.
. This report makes reference to my evolution and skills development as a specialist nurse, in providing nursing care to the adult patient and elderly/family in critical condition. This journey passes not only for the assessment, planning, management, supervision, care, advice, training, that cut across all areas of competence, but also for capacity of acting as a reference element, motivating and guiding professional practices, contributing to changing attitudes and behaviors towards the quality of nursing care and health gains.
