The present report falls within the scope of the curricular units Professional Practice (I and II) and Pedagogical Intervention Project. It shall be presented to the Portuguese Catholic University, in order to obtain a Master's Degree in Music Teaching. This document exposes all the information gathered and produced during 2016/2017 school year at Music Academy of Oliveira de Azeméis, where my supervised teaching practice was carried out (in the area of specialization of violin and group class), under the guidance of Professor Sofia Serra (scientific advisor) and Professor Francisco Pereira de Sousa (cooperative pedagogical advisor). In the second part of this document a Pedagogical Intervention Project is presented, which focuses on the problem of motivation for the individual practice of the instrument. The main objectives were (through the creation of the violin ensemble) to promote and develop in the students an interest/motivation to practice violin, by attempting to create emotional connections (to the violin, to the performed pieces and in the student-teacher relation) so they become more autonomous and responsible (awareness of their individual role in the group), thus improving their behaviour and attitudes. The target-group (II violins section students) was the one that showed more problems in Strings Orchestra. Taking into account the classifications (mostly negatives) of orchestra and instrument disciplines on the firs term, an urgency of an intervention in this group was verified. The investigation was based on the theoretical lenses related to the problem (focusing on the motivation), explaining the theories of reference authors such as Ryan & Deci (2000), Pintrich (2003), among others. The methodology fits within the investigation-action logic. Various techniques of observation, data collection and analysis were used (direct subject observation, logbook/field notes, recording, focused group discussions, questionnaire surveys), as well as intervention strategies (motivation, pedagogical differentiation) on every project phase. The collected and analysed data allowed to conclude that the objectives were fulfilled (generally speaking), with the students being able to improve their performance and results of orchestra class (significantly) and instrument (moderate improvements). This reflected as an effective progress in their learnings – overall the project had a positive impact on the students.
