Abstract

This report was written in the context of the Nursing Masters Degree on Medical and Surgical Nursing and presents a critical analysis of the developed skills all through internship. My internship was divided into three parts: first, Emergency Service; second, Intensive and Intermediate Care; third, optional area. I was immediately credited by the UCP’s Scientific Council for the first one, as I had been working in the Emergency Service, since the year 2000 in the Barreiro Montijo Hospital Centre, Hospital Nossa Senhora do Rosário, EPE. The second part was spent in the UUM, in the Hospital de S. José, EPE, which is part of Central Lisbon’s Hospital Centre, and the last one in the ECCI (Continued Care Team) in Barreiro’s Medical Centre. All through internship I mostly developed communicative skills in what concerns dealing with both the patient and his family or the closest person to the patient. This was achieved through service and personal training and also through teaching formally and informally how to prevent IACS. In the UUM, I developed skills related to specialized nursing care to critical patients or to those in organic failure and I identified problematic situations which led to the development of projects on pneumonia’ prevention associated to ventilation (project work on correct procedure in «Suction of secretions of ventilated patients in open circuit») and to wound treatment (preparation of a handbook named «Chemist’s available material – user’s guide». As to the internship in ECCI, I performed specialized nursing continual care to patients, emphasizing the role of communication in palliative care. This report describes not only the developed skills and activities and the major difficulties and problematic situations encountered but also the strategies used to overcome them, improving my performance through internship. Simultaneously a retrospective analysis of my performance is presented as well as some suggestions about the places where the internship took place
