Abstract

This report is a conclusion in the Master's Nursing Degree Program with a specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing (2010/2012), at the Catholic Portuguese University of Lisbon, and aims to be the final stage, which through its practical component, allowed the acquisition and development of skills in assisting the patient as well as family members at a critical stage. This report aims to present the route taken in different areas of clinical practice, describes the personal goals set and the main activities in each module stage, and reflects on the activities and skills developed, and finally a critical analysis of my performance. The stage was divided into three modules, corresponding to different contexts of clinical practice and that I shall list in chronological order and locations: module II - Intensive Care Unit was conducted at Hospital Pulido Valente, a medical-surgical ICU between April 27 and June 24, 2011; module I - Emergency Service, Hospital de Vila Franca de Xira between September 26 to November 18, 2011, and, finally, module III - Option I conducted in Control Committee at CCI Hospital Pulido Valente Hospital between the 21 November 2011 to 27 January 2012. In each of the modules, I focused my attention in providing specialized care to critically ill patients and their family and I emphasized the area of professional education and awareness for these issues. In module II were addressed issues of privacy and patient Ileostomy admitted to ICU. In module I, the studies were related to the safety care and communication of bad news, in a context of urgency. In the last module, I focused my work on the prevention and control of infection associated with central venous catheter and the surgical site. The work on the different training modules contributed to the growth and appreciation of my personal and professional experience through the development and consolidation of skills in the area of specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing.
