Abstract

The main purpose of this report is to describe the whole process and enlighten the carried out skills through the internships held at Nursing Internship Curricular Unit. The mentioned internships are included in the Professional Nursing Master Graduation Curriculum regarding Medical Surgery Nursing expertise at Universidade Católica Portuguesa / Instituto de Ciências da Saúde (UCP / ICS) in Lisbon, Portugal. The main guideline and purpose of this investigation relied on the critical patient assistance and the support given to the family. In what concerns to the Emergency wise, I focused my healthcare contribution upon the Emergency Department, considered as a critical health services field, in which the patient injuries seriousness and family support needs indexes are the highest regarding the other Healthcare Services. In order to become this investigation and work wider and substantial, an extensive range of Medical Surgery Healthcare Services were given to the critic patients. During this process, I acquired different abilities applied to patient healthcare, from different age stages, as well as her/his family through the promotion of humanized procedures as, for instance, the number and schedule of family and friends visits. Due to my professional experience I developed colleagues’ formation expertise through unusual and precise activities in the Emergency Room. Regarding the carried on projects, I would like to emphasize two mains procedures that were developed: a Nursing Schedule Sheet to be used at the Ambulance or Helicopter between Hospitals and transportation bags for critical patients. The importance to identify problematic and critical situations is also a procedure to be highlighted once it created a diverse range of activities which allowed a change of professional practices. These adjustments give a tremendous contribute considering the infection control in a hospital, risk and material logistics managements. In the Emergency Operation Room, I delivered healthcares in the three main sides of the perioperatory period. Once again, in this stage, I focused on the assistance to the patient’s family, promoting them some comfort as the result of an effective communication as well as an informative poster. In order to become everyone in the team involved, I established procedures criterions and create graphic information (posters) regarding chemistry substances dilution. Furthermore, I contributed for the prevention of the control infection inside the hospital, introducing new materials to surgical dressing and vascular catheters processes. This contribution was achieved through very objective and easy graphic information in posters and in mouse pads. Finally, I enlighten the fact of had been created a handbag with all the material and medicines used in the perioperatory period in order to support the first emergency surgery measures.
