Abstract

I decided to undertake the 4th Professional Master’s Degree Course in the area of Medical and Surgical Nursing provided by the Health Science Institute of the Portuguese Catholic University in Lisbon with the purpose of acquiring and developing specialized skills in the nursing area. While serving as an evaluation tool for my path as a medical and surgical nursing student, this work is meant to give an account of the skill acquisition, development and certification in this area of specialization by analyzing the activities developed and the experience obtained throughout every training period. I present the goals to be attained during each training period, the activity developed and the different cases I dealt with. I reflect upon my performance and analyze it from a critical point of view, explaining the reasons for the decisions taken and underling the specialized skills I obtained and developed in the process. In as much as a nurse’s skills are equally reflected in the promotion of quality and security of nursing care, I try to demonstrate how my intervention contributed to the continuous improvement of these two factors. The hands-on approach to this course included three training modules. Module I, related to emergency nursing, took place in my working environment, at the General Emergency Service of the Cascais Hospital. During this training period I dealt with patients and their families in emergency situations, which gave me the opportunity to improve on the specific skills needed to face this type of challenge. I privileged the continuity of after discharge/inter-institutional transfer care, as well as the professional development of nurses. Module III, concerning the optional training period, was carried out at the Infection Control Committee of a hospital in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo area. For this Module I established the goal of how to contribute for a drop in the occurrence of with health care associated infections through the careful monitoring of the activity of nurses, doctors, operational assistants and visitors. I performed epidemiological surveillance, audited practices, gave training and information on the good practices recommended. Module II, concerning intensive/intermediate nursing care, was credited to my previous professional experience caring for patients in critical condition and their families at the Coronary Intensive Care Unit of the Santa Cruz Hospital. This experience proved crucial in developing and improving some of the specialized skills previously acquired, thus optimizing both time and results. The personal and professional growth brought about by this course has been translated into the acquisition and development of skills in the area of medical and surgical nursing which will enable me to improve my assistance to the patient in a critical condition and his family, while insuring and promoting the improvement of both the security and quality of nursing care, personal and professional development, scientific sustainability and research in Nursing Care
