Abstract

Current Report’s goal is to present and analyze the work developed between 27th of April 2011 and 27th of January 2012, following the Masters Course in Nursing, of Professional Nature, with specialization in Medical-Surgical field; based on the developing of nursing healthcare services to adults and elderly patients. The internship was divided in three modules. Module III (Geriatric Nursing option) was performed in “Padre Carlos” Retirement Home. Here, technical and scientific competences were developed, performing specialized nursing healthcare treatments to resident elderly people and their family. Aiming to improve the quality of healthcare performed, two training sessions were carried out (addressed to Retirement Home nursing assistants about “Patient Positioning, Pressure Ulcers Prevention and Body Posture”), team discussions concerning how to take care of elderly patients (attitudes and behaviors) were organized, a poster over this theme was built (was presented in the “V Elderly National Congress” in FIL), was created a manual of procedures for nurses in order to nursing healthcare. Based in patient’s individual process was crafted a residents’ admission form and a register form to evaluate wounds and its treatment. Lastly, two dossiers with training articles were constructed, including several healthcare performing essential contents. Module I was performed in an Emergency Unit in Hospital da Luz’s Permanent Medical Care Service. Its main objective was to develop technical and scientific competences, performing specialized nursing healthcare to elderly people in urgent/emerging situation of high/medium risk and their family. To accomplish that, I perform a database of wounds treatment clinical equipment, which included its description, action mechanism, application method, medical indications and counter-indications, advantages and disadvantages of the different types of material usage. Module II also took place in Hospital da Luz, in the Intensive Care Unit. Its main purpose was to develop technical, scientific and interpersonal skills, completing specialized nursing healthcare to elderly clients in critical status and their family. In this module, Pressure Ulcers theme was performed a training session and developed threw the creation of a treatment decision algorithm poster. It was also performed a training session, aiming to raise the awareness about clinical waste sorting. Finally, tube feeding administration norm was updated in the Intensive Care Unit
