Abstract

This report appears under the curricular unit named Report, within the Master's Degree in Nursing, specialisation area of child health and pediatrics, from the Institute of Health Sciences, of the Portuguese Catholic University. The work aims to describe and reflect on the activities and experiences during the Internship subject which is divided into three stages, representing the different contexts of practice of the Nurse Specialized in Child Health and Pediatrics. This one most provide the highest possible health condition in children and young, whereby the chosen topic for competence acquisition was Health Promotion. Health promotion is characterized by the ability that the individual has to change the behaviour, in order to enhance his health. In the context of health promotion in pediatrics, this concept exists to promote educational initiatives and support for parents, with the goal of providing better care to the child. In the different internship stages, activities were developed, in the context of health promotion, according to the needs of each internship location. Thus, during stage I, corresponding to the internship focused on primary health care, after making the situation diagnosis it was decided to be relevant to intervene under the Prevention of Childhood Obesity, having been developed an orientation guide on this subject which includes a leaflet to be distributed to the parents during the childhood obesity prevention session. A poster aimed at children was developed, alluding to the practice of a healthy alimentation. In stage II, related to the internship in medical services / surgery, due its specific population, children with chronic illness, instruments of training and information have been developed in the context of children with stomas. Thus, teaching kits have been developed in order to assist the teaching carried out by nursing staff to the parents and that consequently were learning facilitators, making them independent in children care, reducing their hospitalization time and consequently improving the child’s quality of life. Stage III was divided into two periods, one corresponding to an internship in a paediatric emergency department, where a poster was developed as a strategy for health promotion and a teaching program on strategies that promote health was carried out for nursing staff and a second period, related to an internship in a neonatal intensive care unit, which was not performed, because accreditation had been granted, justified by the experience had in this area. The different activities carried out in this subject were essential for the acquisition of skills as a Specialized Nurse in the area of Child Health and Paediatrics, due to communication and relational skills developed with the child and his family at different ages, stages of development and contexts, as well as by new knowledge and experiences acquired throughout the journey.
