Abstract

This report is part of the 13th Course of the Master's Degree in Nursing, with a specialization in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing within the Curricular Unit Final Stage and Report, from the Institute of Health Sciences of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Porto. The internship comprised three contexts of care practice: Primary Health Care, Pediatric Emergency Service and Neonatology Service. Accreditation for the internship “Child and Family Health - Surveillance and Clinical Decision” obtained through professional experience in a seven years Medical Pediatrics Service. The main objective of this document is to present the path taken along the Course Unit Final Stage and Report, demonstrating the skills developed within the scope of specialized assistance, as well as those inherent to the master's degree. The competencies, provided by the University's study plan, are divided into four areas of activity: Provision of Care, Research, Management and Training. These domains and competencies were associated with the objectives, the activities developed to achieve them and a critical reflection, supported by scientific evidence, having been used a critical-reflective methodology, using bibliographical research. The main focus of my performance was the development of skills to support the performance and transition of parenthood, having developed health education activities with the theme "Activities Promoting Development in the First Year of Life", school health, having in this context participated in a rubric about bullying, communication with children/youth and family and pain management. It is important to emphasize the importance of the different internship contexts, which constituted enriching experiences, providing opportunities for learning and improving the skills inherent to the nurse specialist in child and pediatric health nursing and which are highlighted throughout this report. Previous professional experience in a Pediatric Medical service was also of high value, given that it gave me preponderant confidence and confidence in establishing an effective therapeutic relationship with the child and their family in different contexts. Therefore, the entire training path developed allowed me to acquire and develop essential skills, within the scope of the speciality, for a differentiated and excellent care provision.
