Abstract

This work comes under the Post-Degree with Specialization in Nursing and Child Health Paediatrics, from Catholic University of Portugal and with the purpose of the award of the Degree of Master of Nursing, after being subjected to public defence. This entire training course was grounded in the acquisition of a differentiated set of professional skills in the area of specialization, which were built on a set of general objectives, recommended by the syllabus of the course. In this context, emerged the requirement to do a post-graduate training, which formed the matrix for achieving these general objectives and professional skills. Inherently to these, it urged the need to set up more specific objectives and develop activities, according to the specificities of the different care contexts. This report is the base point of the analysis of the entire developed course and it aims a permanent personal critical and reflective exercise, using the scientific evidence, which formed the necessary support in all this process and which surely contributed to the improvement of her professional practice. Having in mind the paradigm of nursing care in this area of specialization aims the promotion of the welfare of the dyad child / family and their harmonious development along the life cycle, countless challenges are placed. In this sense, the therapeutic relationship developed in the professional practice of nursing must not be detached from the family and their needs in a large and integrated view of all areas of intervention (bio-psycho-socio-cultural), the emerging need for real Partnership relationship. Another challenge which is issued refers when dealing with the suffering of the child, and invariably of the family, being extremely decisive the role of the nursing professional in supporting the coping process inherent to their transition state. Thus, the practice of Care in this area of expertise should not be confined to scientific knowledge and technical skill, but it must be extrapolated to another dimension as or more important, which matches with the relational aspect. All experiential learning experienced in various contexts of the post-graduate training allowed this observation and contributed to her personal and professional enrichment.
