This internship report was performed in the scope of the Post-Graduation in Medical-Surgical Nursing. This graduation’s study plan includes a theoretic and a practical components consisting on an internship divided in three modules (Urgency/Emergency, Intensive Care and an optional area) using the Project Work methodology. This work method allowed me, in a dynamic, flexible and scientific way, to pursue a path that totally fulfilled my personal desires. The activities carried out in these modules had, as a common aim, the development of technical-scientific and relational competences as a Specialized Nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing, through the provision of healthcare to critical and/or end-of-life patients and their family, considering two main subjects: healthcare partnerships (between the health team and informal healthcare) and patient’s security. The accomplishment of my objetives and acquisition of new competences were possible due to a large contribution from the knowledge acquired in my initial graduation and developed during continuous training and post-graduation; the experience and professional knowledge acquired previously in the daily care practice; and personal innate characteristics as nurse and person (perseverance, observing capacity and proactivity). The first internship was performed in the General Emergency Service of Curry Cabral Hospital and was directed to the promotion of patient’s security through their correct identification, the disinfection of materials and correct hand hygiene from all healthcare professionals; integration of new professionals through critical analysis of daily practices; and implementation of a wider visit schedule in the observation room of the Emergency Service to meet the family needs. The optional internship was performed in the Palliative and Continuing Care Unit of Luz Hospital. The work developed was aimed to the understanding and capability of communication techniques (like crossed fingers); to the symptomatic control through application of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic techniques and patient’s and family awareness through the training of alarm symptoms like constipation, insomnia and dry mouth. The third internship was carried out in the Intensive Care Unit of Curry Cabral Hospital focused on the promotion of self care and family integration in the care of invasive ventilation patients; awareness of the health team to the correct separation of hospital residues and hand hygiene; and to the orientation of patients to the National Association of Continuing Care. In summary, this report is attempts to describe and analyze the path followed during the Post- Graduation in Medical-Surgical Nursing, as well as show a reflection about the nursing practices and it’s repercussion in my performance as a future specialized nurse in a cardiology infirmary, demonstrating the acquired synergies.
