Abstract

In the last few years there has been a considerable technical and scientific development in the health field. The growing knowledge production through evidence emphasizes the permanent updating need by nurses. This update includes several knowledge fields, justifying their delimitation by specific areas. The individuals’ needs as well as the health/ illness proceeding which they’re exposed to keep changing according to their vital phase. For the nurses’ interventions to be the most suitable in the search for care excellence, the acquisition of specialized clinical competences is required, as well as a deep knowledge of the human answer to each phase’s own specific situations. The search for this care excellence was the reason I attended this Masters Course with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing at the Institute of Health Sciences from Portuguese Catholic University. During this course I performed probation in services at S. Teotónio Hospital (EPE). In the general emergency service it was my purpose to develop competences related to the clinical nursing practice in the fields of urgency/ emergency, team leadership in the specialized care and supervision of professional practice in the area of Specialization in Medical-Surgical nursing. In the polyvalent intensive care unit the main goal was to develop competences in the approach to the critical patient. In the Control of Infection Commission the objective was the acquisition and knowledge consolidation in order to provide a better accomplishment related to Commission Infection Control as well as to put in practice quality assistance to the patient, by using safe practice. This probation enabled my own development of competences both in the care providing area (structured in the reflexive practice in action, the action itself and the reflection during action) and the management and care supervision, training and investigation in the Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing field.
