Abstract

This report consists on a description of the Medical Surgical Nursing internship, in accordance with the Curricular Plan of the Nursing Masters Degree, in the area of Medical Surgical Nursing Specialization of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) /Institute of Health Sciences (ICS). The Medical Surgical Nursing internship comprises three modules, namely: Module IUrgency, Module II- Intensive Care and Module III-Optional. Module I Urgency was certified to me by the Scientific Council of UCP/ICS acknowledging the development of skills in that area since January 2007 to the present date in the Central Urgency Unit of the Northern Lisbon Hospital Center Hospital de Santa Maria. In module II Intensive Care I chose the Intensive Care Unit of Cardiothoracic Surgery of the Central Lisbon Hospital Center Hospital de Santa Marta. In this module, I developed skills and applied the know-how related to care provision to high-risk patients and family / significant person undergoing cardiac surgery. Training needs were detected, related to the communication between nursing teams. As such, activities and strategies were developed in order to promote change and consequently the improvement of care provision standards. Module III (optional) was carried out in the Central Emergency Bloc of the Northern Lisbon Hospital Center Hospital de Santa Maria. This internship allowed me to acquire expertise in scientific, technical, relational and caring in the perioperative period promoting communication and patient comfort and family / significant person during this process. The purpose of this report is to document the learning and skills developed throughout the course of training as well as its impact on care, training and management by giving visibility to the development of skills of the Nurse Specialist.
