Abstract

This report tis an explanation, analysis and reflection of the activities carried out in the Master Course of Professional Nature in the area of Medical-Surgical Specialization, which aimed to acquire skills for professional practice as a Nurse Specialist. The internship, consisting of three modules, was carried out in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital of Santarém, and in the Department of Surgery of the Hospital Unit Caldas da Rainha of the Centro Hospitalar do Oeste Norte. The first module, about the critically ill patient in a situation of urgency/emergency, I was credited by the set of specialized clinical skills demonstrated throughout my career as a nurse at General Care. For each module objectives were outlined in the initial Project of the internship. The second module, related to the internship in an intensive care unit, aimed at developing fundamental scientific and relational skills in the area of providing nursing care to the critically ill patients undergoing mechanical ventilation and his family, to deepen knowledge about monitoring invasive parameters and techniques used in the dialysis unit. For the third module, the optional one, I drafted and implemented a Project concerned with the preparation for returning home, with the aim of contributing to improving the quality and safety of care for patients with special needs at home. The activities developed allowed to relate, in a practical context, the knowledge acquired during the theoretical period and consolidate competences concerned with the professional practice, ethical and legal, for the nursing care to critically ill patients.
