Abstract

The Specialist Nurse presents an in-depth knowledge in a specific nursing domain, taking in account human responses to life processes and health problems, demonstrating a range of expertise covering a field of specialized intervention (Ordem dos Enfermeiros, 2007). In order to achieve the Master’s and Specialization in Medical Surgical Nursing we performed three traineeship modules: General Emergency Department (HSTV), Cardiothoracic Surgery and National Institute for Medical Emergencies (INEM). The HSTV’s General Emergency Department, according to DGS, is a polyvalent emergency, being the more diverse level of response to the situation of urgency/ emergency. In this traineeship we carried out activities in all areas of care, however, we gave primacy to Triage, Emergency/ Resuscitation Room, Minor Surgery Room and Clinical Decision Unit, in which some techniques were performed, namely, stabilization of the victim, monitoring of vital parameters and take some specimens for analysis. The INEM is the coordinating organ of a valence of health which is a new concept of health care, characterized by a set of outside hospital, hospital and inter-hospital actions. For a better understanding of this institute was necessary to know the different means available, from the ambulance to the medical car of emergency and resuscitation (VMER). In these areas we had several positive experiences, from the referral of urgent patients until the provision of emergency care, particularly in cardiac arrest. The INCCI is an institute that has as its primary goal the surgical treatment of heart and great vessels intra-cardiac diseases. In this context the most common surgeries are valve repair and heart bypass surgery. The patient admitted to this unit it’s a patient whose condition may lead to several complications, involving the failure of one or more organs. We were able to care for patients who had undergone triple cardiac bypass, aortic aneurysm and the placement of prosthetic valves. We were given the opportunity to watch some surgeries where we could contact and learn “in loco”, as well as observing certain techniques, as extracorporeal circulation. The completion of this report allowed us to reflect at the work and activities during the traineeships, as well as a global review of general programmatic objectives, still has enabled us develop certain skills: technical scientific in the area of critical patients, self knowledge, relational and investigative ones.
