Abstract

The present report was developed under the Master of Nursing with a specialization in Child Health and Paediatrics, held at the Institute of Health Sciences of the Portuguese Catholic University and aims at a reflective analysis of skills acquired and developed during the curricular unit training, being as an evaluation tool in order to obtain the Master Degree in the above cited area. The curriculum of the Master Course comprises the completion of three modules which are the following: Module I - Child Health, Module II - medical and surgical services in the context of acute and chronic disease and Module III - Paediatric and Neonatology Emergency Services. In what concerns Module I, I was granted the accreditation to it because I presented the required criteria. Module II was performed in the Pediatric Internment of the Entre Douro e Vouga Hospital Centre, lasting 180h of contact. Module III is divided into two parts Paediatric Emergency and Neonatology. Both were held at the Entre Douro e Vouga Hospital Centre and lasted 90h respectively. The main objectives of the internship/training relate to the development of skills defined in the syllabus, incorporating indepth practical knowledge in the area of specialization and respond assertively in situations of greater complexity. Some of the central issues developed by me during the training were: breastfeeding, partnership of care, parenting and grief. This document points out the aims and activities outlined during the training which contributed to the development of skills. In what regards the description of the developed skills, these are divided into four areas such as care giving, care management, research and training. The development of competences related to care giving emphasizes the development of communication and relational skills, the acquisition and incorporation of scientific knowledge throughout practice, in order to make decisions based on scientific evidence and a resulting work methodology that would necessarily result in a quality care giving. The acquisition of skills in care management enable a care giving that responds suitably to the needs of the child / young person and family in a safe and quality environment. Skills development was a major concern throughout the training since it is an area that contributed to my personal and professional growth as well as to other nurses. The constant bibliographical research and the incorporation of scientific evidence in the practice led to a continuous and permanent updating. They were activities that contributed to the improvement of research skills. The diverse course modules during the training led to the development of skills that will allow care giving to child / young and family, even when in situations of bigger complexity so as to help maximize one’s health, prevention and treatment of disease throughout different stages of life.
