Abstract

In this report I describe the learnings developed in the course of the Internship in the various modules. I began this internship in the Integrated Responses Centre/Treatment Team in Braga. The internship continued in Bom Jesus Health House, São Luís Unit – Unit for Addiction Cessation and Psychiatric co-morbidity, and finally in the Consentido Project – Integrated Home Health Care Mobile Unit in the area of Mental Health and Psychiatric (CSBJ). As a common theme these to these three internship modules, I chose to develop my work on people with abuse/dependence of psychoactive substances. The interest in this area stems from my daily practise, wherein arises the need to deepen my knowledge about human responses to the life processes and health problems of this specific population, as well as the development of skills that enable the practise of nursing with a high standard of scientific, technical and human quality. The interventions that were implemented took place both at the individual and the group level, including health education sessions aiming at promoting behaviour changes in the search for healthier life styles and the prevention of relapse. Also, I have used help relations, relaxation and group dynamics as valuable therapeutic instruments in this population. Additionally, several formative sessions for the multidisciplinary teams were conducted on themes related to the area of Mental and Psychiatric Heath and the addiction problem. In the course on the various modules it was possible to deepen knowledge and develop skills which will enable me, as a future Specialist Nurse, to offer better care in particularly demanding and complex situations, having in view the maximization of health, the prevention and treatment of illness and social reintegration. Thus, with this work, I intend to undertake a reflective analysis about the goals and actions planned/implemented in the course of the internship, which resulted in the gaining of skills in the area of Specialization in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, product of all the work developed along the way.
