This document comes as part of the 11st Master Course in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing and it highlights the main contributions of the internship modules for the development of specialized competences in Medical-Surgical Nursing. The internship was performed at the Emergency Service and the Intermediate Care Unit of a Hospital in the metropolitan area of Porto, from September 5th, 2018 to January 5th, 2019. This report aims to: demonstrate the deepening of knowledge and skills in the area of Healthcare associated infection; describe and reflect the course of evolution and learning throughout the internship to meet the goals defined in the internship project; demonstrate the acquisition of competencies through the activities developed during the internship and to base the options and activities developed in the evidence resulting from the review of the literature, the applicable ethical criteria and the efficient management of available resources. The Healthcare associated Infections, according to the literature consulted, are the first cause of significant morbidity and mortality and in Portugal, which in addition to hindering the adequate treatment of the patient also entails increased costs of the hospital resources. The use of invasive procedures, antibiotic therapy, among other factors increases the vulnerability of patients to infection, so in this report is addressed the issue of infection control associated with invasive procedures such as the bladder catheter and the peripheral venous catheter insertion, maintenance and removal. This document also presents a description of the activities carried out during the internship and the development of common competences established by the Order of Nurses in the four domains: the domain of professional, ethical and legal responsibility where situations related to the duty of professional secrecy are addressed and analyzed, the duty to inform and presumed consent; the domain in the area of continuous quality improvement, where activities aimed at improving and safety of the heathcare are valued, opportunities for improvement are identified, resolution strategies are presented in the context of in-service training, the domain of care management that describes the activities carried out in the management of care and services and finally the domain of learning development where the learning activities related to the specificity of each service are described and the promotion of the process of personal and professional self-development. After identifying the opportunities for improvement, the contributions to the context of the practice in the Emergency Service consisted of a training action entitled "Prevention of infection associated with the bladder catheter" and the elaboration of a poster related to this theme. At the ICU, there were held awareness sessions entitled "Prevention of infection associated with the peripheral venous catheter" as well as the preparation of a poster. The conclusion addresses the key aspects of the internship and its contributions to professional growth, as well as the health gains it provided to the population.
