Abstract

This report aims to contribute to the reflection of the importance of the interaction of experiences, knowledge and skills of Nurse Specialist in Mental Health Nursing (EESM).Throughout this document and in accordance with the descriptive and critical - reflective methodology that was used, are presented the skills, contexts, audiences and intervention strategies. These were trained on internship and are of great importance to reveal their use in professional practice. The internship was composed of three modules, namely (1) Healthy lifestyles promotion - Diagnosis and intervention, (2) Development of skills in units of intervention in crisis in adults and the optional one was in (3) Geriatrics and dementias. These were held at the Health Institute of São João de Deus, in Barcelos. These three areas are a whole that is reflected in the skills that the EESM should have, since it is able to make assessments and biopsychosocial interventions with appropriate techniques. This is indispensable for the patients to keep their autonomy, either after discharge - prevention of relapses - either even when they are institutionalized. There was the opportunity to develop and deepen vocabulary and techniques in the area of mental health clients and their families. The intervention was at the household, the internment in crisis and with the institutionalized clients, with chronic mental illness, such as dementia and cognitive deficit. The techniques used were the help relationship and assertive communication, psychoeducation and pedagogical activities, study case management and the psychotherapeutic interventions. By the results, it appears that for the development and consolidation of EESM the skills, in the four areas of expertise, are very relevant and complement each other. These require training in order to improve its implementation, designing these benefits in professional practice.
