This report is part of the syllabus of the post-graduate degree course in Mental Health Nursing and Psychiatry at the “Universidade Católica Portuguesa”. It´s main objective is to describe and reflect on the activities and skills acquired as an intern, as well as to serve as an assessment tool. The training course was developed into three different modules. In module I, which was held at the “Centro de Dia do Centro Social e Paroquial de Carnide”, expertise was developed in promoting lifestyles, making diagnosis, as well as focus on preventative medicine in mental illness. Module II was held at the “Clínica Psiquiátrica II do Hospital Júlio de Matos” during which time I was able to develop expertise in the area of mid-life crises, with impact on the family. Module III took place at “Unidade Maria Josefa da Casa de Saúde Maria Josepha da Idanha” where expertise in the provision of care for gerontopsyciatry was developed based on cognitive stimulation in dementia. The main theme of this work concerns dementia. At a time when society is ageing, care of patients with dementia is becoming more of a diagnostic challenge for nursing, especially in Mental Health and Psychiatry. This work reflects the benefits of health care for patients, their families and care workers as a result of specialised nursing intervention.
