Abstract

This report was developed within the scope of the Curricular Unit “Final Internship and Report” of the 16th Master's Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the Area of Nursing for Critically Ill Patients, at the Instituto das Ciências da Saúde of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Through it, the path taken during this Curricular Unit is revealed, emphasizing the acquisition of skills necessary for the role of Specialist Nurse and Master’s level practice. This process of learning and acquiring skills took place and was consolidated during internships carried out in an Emergency Department and in an Intensive Care Unit of a University Hospital. I used a descriptive and expository methodology, carrying out a critical reflection on the practice, on the objectives outlined and the activities developed. The fundament for the acquisition of skills is carried out according to common and specific skills, with commons being analyzed in a more individualized way and the specific combining the complementarity they present. The activities elaborate to contribute to the development of continuous quality improvement projects are highlighted, which represents one of the crucial common skills of the Specialist Nurse, in the development of professional learning and the provision of specialized care. The importance of decision-making based on the best scientific evidence available, within the multidisciplinary team for safe and well-founded practices, is highlighted. Providing care to critically ill patients require a knowledge base that allows an evidence-based decision-making within the multidisciplinary team. In this area, the intervention of the Specialist Nurse is differentiating, both in the way they carry out a holistic assessment of the patient and family, anticipating situations of instability, and in how they apply specialized knowledge in their clinical practice. It contributes to the development of new knowledge in its intervention area, participates in a process of continuous improvement and promotes quality in care. It is essential to promote the growth of Nursing as a science, as a source of knowledge in the different areas of intervention, which is the greatest motivation resulting at the end of this learning path.
