The present report conveys experiences and reflections lived in the Centro Hospitalar São João – Polo Valongo’s Emergency Department, Hospital Pedro Hispano’s Intensive Care Department and the Instituto Nacional de Emergência Médica. Its holds descriptive and reflective elements regarding experienced events, with a critical view based on the current state-of-the-art knowledge whilst suggesting strategies to overcome the problems that were identified, enhancing nursing care. A descriptive and reflexive methodology was employed. Its structure is in accordance with the specialist nurse’s competence domains and aims to show the developing of knowledge and skills in the assistance of adult/elderly patients in urgent and emergent situations within the area of specialization of Medical-Surgical Nursing. In the professional, ethical and legal responsibility domain, considerations on ethical and deontological principles are emphasized, as are the respect for the patient’s dignity, intimacy, singularity and will. Regarding the continuous improvement of quality, the importance of nursing records is underlined, as is the communication and employment of a procedure regarding care of patients submitted to a neuromuscular blockade. In the management of care domain, prominence is given to the importance of a correct end of shift handing and the need to intervene in non-compliance with therapeutic regimens by ambulatory patients. On the subject of developing professional skills and knowledge domain, emphasis is given to an educational workshop on Invasive Mechanical Ventilation, a video entitled “A loon on the ICU” where positive aspects are highlighted and situations where room for improvement are identified and three articles: a review article on the importance of occupational noise in intensive care units ; a review article on “Pre-hospital emergency care: a changing paradigm” and an integrative review on “Violence against ED nurses”. The developed work reflects the consolidation of pertinent aspects, in partnership with the integrated teams and institutions, allowing an active role from my part in the construction of this path and also in the development and promotion of future skills and practices to be placed forward to enhance efficiency and standards of care.
