Abstract

This document presents a general analysis of work conducted and experience gleaned during my Internship (Module one and three), developed in the After- Graduation in Medical – Surgical Nursing, to develop my specialist skills in how to assist someone in a critical situation and sudden health/sickness process. Module One was undertaken in the Emergency Service of Medio Ave - Famalicão Hospitalar Center, and I believe represented an important step in my development as a future specialist nurse, in taking care of a critical patient in the context of urgency/emergency. Module Three took place in the Infection Control Commission of the Local Health Unity of Matosinhos and resulted in a higher level of understanding and knowledge being acquired concerning the responsibilities of the nurse in charge of Infection Control with particular attention given to the prevention and control of infections associated to health care. With this report I hope to accomplish the following goals: I) Describe the tasks performed during the two internships evidencing the skills developed and new competencies acquired; II) Justify the processes and actions deployed during my contact and interaction with patients during the internships, and reflect on the effects of the experience as regards my self-development; III) Illustrate the effectiveness of the skills acquired. The methods used in this report include description and reflection; the consultation of biographical works; mobilization of knowledge acquired and integrated; and reflection on the developed skills. The report is structured in three parts: in first the part – introduction – is realized and integration of the work; the second part reflect on the real-life experiences and acquired competencies attained during the internship, difficulties found and the way they enabled me to grow personally and professionally proving the applicability of the different methods of problem analysis and evidence-based nursing; the third part contains the final considerations adopted when resolving problems encountered during the internships.
