Abstract

This document was produced as part of the Final Practicum and Report, which is a curricular unit of the Professional Masters Course in Infant and Pediatric Health Nursing of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa of Porto. Firstly, it is important to state that this document will reflect the learning curve, all the skills, knowledge and attitudes developed during the placements. Lastly, it will be a component of the final evaluation. The Master’s curriculum requires the student to acquire specific competencies to successfully obtain the academic title of master, in this specific case Nursing Master’s in Infant and Paediatric Health. The specific competencies were grouped in four practice domains: caregiving, care management, research and training. There were three distinct practice settings: community health care, paediatric emergency and neonatology. During all the different placements I had the opportunity to take care of newborns, children, teenagers and their families in several different situations. Consequently, to achieve the competencies during the practices, I set goals and programmed activities. The piece of work presented in this document will be a critical reflection upon my experiences, as a result of my professional/personal growth. All the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed during this process will improve my five years practice, which I mention at the beginning of the report. It was possible to apply my knowledge and also my comprehension and problem resolution skills, for example in the optimization of the use pain control techniques during children vaccination, I have demonstrate capacity to integrate new knowledges, for instance the Manchester triage, I have deal with complex questions, as the caring for premature newborns or disabled children, I have provided care, reflecting in the implications and ethical and social responsibilities, for example in the care of children with suspected SARS-COV-2 infection, I pursue the Evidence Based Practice, applying for instance the NIDCAP philosophy, I have shown skills to properly communicate my knowledge, reasoning and conclusions, throw a well-founded speech, in particular in the pair formations and health education sessions. So, I find I was able to achieve all the goals and had acquired the study plan specific competencies requested to the obtention of the Nursing Master’s in Infant and Paediatric Health.
