Abstract

This report emerges as part of a postgraduate degree in the Medical-Surgical Nursing Specialty from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and its main purpose is to demonstrate the activities and skills, developed in the internship. The internship is divided in three parts: pre-hospital, held at the National Institute of Medical Emergency; urgency / emergency, in the emergency room at Centro Hospitalar de S. João; and intensive care. The identification of various problem situations in the internship locations, its critical analysis and resolution proposals were activities transversal to the internship fields. I would like to highlight some problems detected at the National Institute of Medical Emergency like improper use of 112 as well as the lack of knowledge regarding the Basic Life Support, having for that performed a poster, a brochure and designed a training session in a high school. I also identified a lack of use of the Induced Hypothermia technique in post resuscitation care to victims of cardiac arrest, having carried out a training session The internship led me to an ethical reflection about the experienced situations, therefore I conducted a case study about the issue of resuscitation or not resuscitation to terminally ill patients. So, I elaborated an integrative review article where I approached the question of the presence of family members during the performance of invasive procedures and during resuscitation in a case study about the performance before a critically ill patient in the emergency room in light of the theory from Imogene King. Regarding the emergency room, sensing the difficulty experienced by nurses in enabling the family to remain with patients, I elaborated a hosting guide to the family members, to promote the presence of families among the patients. In this context, I also identified the absence of a Handbook on Nursing Integration, so I developed, together with colleagues from the internship, the respective handbook. As a future nurse specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing I long for that this report reflects the path taken towards the advanced nursing, expert in the excellence of Care.
