Nursing is the specific field of study of the human response to health problems and life transitions. Best practices and safe and high quality care are achieved through the development of knowledge and specific skills of the professionals in this area. The decision to choose the Master's degree in Nursing with Specialisation in Medical-Surgical Nursing was based on preferences and work experience gained. This report will explain the skills and competencies acquired and achieved in the Medical-Surgical Nursing Training Unit. The training took place in the Emergency Unit and in the Infection Control Committee of the Local Health Unit of Matosinhos. This report, through the use of critical and reflective methodology, is divided into three parts: Introduction and objectives; “Association of Nurses” competency requirements achieved; Evidence of the professional development. The skills acquired are both common skills. i.e., development of general nursing skills or specific as the ones acquired through the treatment of a person in a critical condition. It was developed a practice based on the intentional judgement, result of interpretation, analysis, evaluation and inference as well as explanation of the evidences and conceptual considerations. The focus was independence of diagnosis and implementation of nursing practices as opposed to pre-determined models and ways of working.
